Crested Chatter...

Even though they were recently adopted by their foster mom and dad, we want to keep everyone up to date on Sadie and Reba. Both girls went to our vet yesterday and had their stitches removed and all was okay. Reba was still spotting a little, but our vet hopes it’ll resolve soon. This morning, things were normal until suddenly Sadie began bleeding, A LOT. Her mom rushed her to our vet (she lives two miles away), and Doc immediately gathered her and took her to the back. Mom had to leave her for several hours so she could be worked on. Sadie is full of abdominal adhesions and abnormalities. She had a blood vessel grow through her bladder wall into the bladder. The blood was being discharged out of her bladder. Doc also found another abnormal blood vessel and tied it off. The blood was coming from the bladder out the urethra. The surgery was difficult because of the location. Sadie’s mom is to watch her and keep Doc informed. He said he hopes, but she is not out of the woods yet. They have tried to remove all the adhesions that they can. She and Reba will go back next Wednesday, provided there are no more emergencies prior to that. Sadie is doing great! She's had very little blood, just a drop here and there. She isn't so full of fluids anymore (they both received IV fluids during their recent surgery). She is still quiet but gets around fine. She is really bow legged in the back, like a cowboy, but it doesn't seem to affect her. She and Reba return to the vet on Wednesday, but so far, everything is going really well. Sadie is also eating all of her food like a good girl. They seem to feel better now than they have since they arrived, and for that, we are so happy. Side note on Reba: Reba is showing some food aggression with the other dogs, and that will need to be kept in mind for her future home if there are other dogs. She does not like to share when solid kibble is placed out, so meal times will need to fed separately to avoid squabbles. Because she seems to be coming out of her shell in this regard, we can see how she might snap at a child if the child were to take a toy or get near her food. We were told she isn't good with children, and since we have not tested that, we will be unable to consider a home with children under 12.

From Reba and Sadie’s foster mom: I really think Reba is well over 5. They are doing much better today. They ate a full dinner last night and are up walking around. I have noticed some traits Reba has but don’t want to give any false traits due to their health. Reba is truly afraid of men. She runs from them. I mean, she will keep running as long as she hears them. She has improved some but has a long way to go. Her foster father is just ignoring her so that she sees him as no threat. She will not go through the door when he holds it wide open. A man she saw last week, she ran from and was hard for me to get her to come to my arms from the other side of the fenced area. This week, she just kept her distance but stayed near. She is total Velcro to her foster mom, does not want her out of her sight. She is crate trained but not housebroken at this time. This could be due to her health issues. She has some food aggression but is able to be fed with her foster friends. Going into the vets office, she jumped out of the stroller to take off, but foster mom had her also on a leash. So when she is scared she will run. It is said she is not good with children, but we haven’t tested her yet. She does fine with cats. She is clingy to Sadie but seems to be more willing to now separate. She has been a reasonably quiet dog so far. Reba also seems to have a fear of doors. At first it was real hard to get her to walk out through a door. Sometimes she has to be carried, and sometimes there is no issue if I call her. So we are working on that along with the man issue.
