Reba and Sadie entered the rescue at the beginning of December. The following is today's update on their time since they became part of Naked Kisses Dog Rescue: On December 10th, I became the foster parent of Sadie and Reba.  They arrived in the afternoon. I let them rest and get acquainted with my household. I noticed that Sadie would cry if I barely touched her belly. She also didn’t like having her ears touched. Reba was quiet and showed a fear of the door and took a lot of encouragement to walk through it. Also, she had a fear of my husband.
The next morning, we went to see our vet for a spay and check up. We took the little information we had been given about the dogs. I had Sadie’s birthday and some vaccine information on Reba. I told the vet of my observations. He gave them an exam and agreed Sadie did have a problem and was in pain. Both dogs had a CBC chem bloodwork panel completed on them and then spay surgery. Normally, we only do bloodwork on seniors ages 9+ years, but we had an inkling that both dogs would need it (Sadie is 9yrs. old, Reba is 5yrs. old). Usually, it doesn’t take all that long for spay surgeries, but they spent most of the day at the vet’s office. I got the call and picked them up. Our vet was quite upset over Sadie. He said she had been suffering excruciating pain and should actually be dead. He didn’t know how, but she had survived a uterine intussusception, which meant her uterus was folding in on itself. I received my instructions, and we went home. They really felt bad, and I felt so sorry for them. The next day I took them out and noticed Sadie was having a jelled discharge. I brought her in and was cleaning her up when she delivered, in my hand, a golf ball sized vaginal polyp. It was a tumor that had grown in her vagina. I rushed her back to the vet’s office. He said that normally they have to be cut out, but Sadie had taken care of it herself. He said her hormones were way off due to the uterine intussusception.
The next day, I was back at our vet’s office with Reba. She was having a vaginal discharge. She went on antibiotics. He said her uterine stump had infection in it. If the antibiotics didn't clear it up by the 26th, he would have to remove it. Then the next day Sadie started bleeding. Took both back in, and they were both on antibiotics. Through all of this, Sadie has been recovering from an ear infection. She has been having such a tough time. The bleeding hadn’t stopped, so today, both girls had their uterine stumps removed, which is a difficult and delicate surgery. He said in his 40 years of practice, he has only seen one other case. He said this is so rare. They are going to hurt for a few days. I am giving antibiotics and keeping them warm. It is going to take time to heal. They are home now, resting, and hopefully the bleeding will stop soon. I feel so sorry for them. They look totally miserable. They are snuggled together and did eat a small dinner.Â
Hopefully, we are now on the road to recovery.
